Artist’s Statement
Understanding watercolor and all its possibilities creates a lifelong fascination. It is a difficult medium to master, since you are subject to the physics of water. You constantly have to be aware of how much water is on your paper, how much paint you have on your brush, how these three are going to react, and how far you can push this reaction.
Using the chiaroscuro technique, I can create a sense of drama and mood in the paintings. My favorite subjects are tinker toys and mechanical objects because of their attractive shapes. These objects make it easier to focus on positive and negative spaces. This frees me to choose my own color combinations and concentrate on strong color harmony.
With the tinker toys, I focus on the composition. I like creating strong movement and purposely moving the viewer through the painting in a very directed line while creating a strong vertigo effect.
With the mechanical objects, I use the shapes as vehicles for the diverse range of techniques the watercolor medium offers. I like to employ contrasting effects, such as layers of drips and large washes of smooth color, along with wet on wet approaches.
